Android Tablets

The Xoom is currently receiving in areas outside of the US of A  it’s Android Honeycomb 3.2 updates ota (excepting Canada as well).  This update is reportedly enabling the SD Card slots on Motorola Xoom Google Experience Devices.  These Android Tablets which were the first to ship with Googles Honeycomb Android OS (3.0, 3.1 and now 3.2) have the dubious honor of shipping incomplete with hardware which isn’t enabled coupled with the promises of rapid response in correcting the situation.  (LTE Verizon 4G isn’t enabled and a non functioning SD Card slot) The Android 3.1 update came and left the issues unresolved.  We’ve heard the rumors about a Xoom 2 Quad core Kal El Tegra chipset sporting tablet in the not too distant future.  So this Google Experience Android Tablet has been without an update for four months to make the device we were sold actually functional.

As early adopters the purchasers of Android tablets are collectively getting marginalized by manufacturers and yes Google alike.  Google is allowing the hardware makers to issue devices with planned obsolescence, and promises of updates which are not being met. People are actually rewarded if they hack the devices to make the purchased hardware perform in the way it was promised when purchased. An SD Card slot isn’t a complex marvel of engineering, my Nook Color Runs Cyanogen mod and is able to boot off the thing into multiple OS’s and ROMs.  There is a conflicting opinion that on a Google Experience Device that Google is the responsible party who ships out updates the day they are ready. Which would imply that they are the ones who would be responsible for allowing Europe to get the SD Card working . If this is the case then they are actively choosing not to have this enabled in the US.  What is the recourse for letting us spend our money on gadgets that sustain your very ecosystem, and letting the manufacturers have their way with us.  If it is the responsibility of Motorola to push out these updates to  customers, then they too are leaving a legacy that yields distrust in their willingness and capacity to correct a stated flawed $800 purchase and do right by their customers.

Either way these sorts of  slow responses leave the Android user base, frustrated, downtrodden and to say it again marginalized.  It isn’t acceptable.  So I hope someone out there in the Google kingdom or the Motorola circus are reading this.  It isn’t acceptable to treat customers like this. There are promises of 18 months of updates on Google Android tablet/devices. At this point it is nearing one third of the shelf life of this device. It is fair to say that legally they are not meeting their obligations to consumers.

Don’t  get me wrong I do love the Android OS, but moments like this make the Apple iPad and the iTunes death grip look less grim

EDIT:  The Motorola Xoom is starting to get Android 3.2 updates within the US now.   See our new post here.
