If you’re trying to buy an HP TouchPad at the $99 dollar price here is the score.
Recently Gizmodo.com had up a posting claiming that BestBuy would be receiving more of the webOS TouchPad tablets (which HP recently discontinued) and shortly thereafter is was redacted. A Best Buy employee “Robert Lopez” was on record saying that the last shipments of this tumultuous tablet were on 8/24 and 8/25 . They would not be receiving any more units. However after TouchPad fever went into full swing there are disturbing reports of people buying them for $300 on sites like ebay and craigslist. To people doing this: DON”T.
The TouchPad was a great deal at $99 or $149 for the 32GB, and webOS is fantastic. However, HP discontinued making selling and promoting webOS devices. If there are developers who had invested time into working on the OS they have since packed up the family wagon and made the pilgrimage to greener lands. (Windows, Android, iOS and most likely not BlackBerry). The HP TouchPad tablet is a deserted landscape, unless there is a surprise return by HP to the webOS ecosystem. I wouldn’t invest much time into that statement, as Todd Bradley is actively seeking to leave HP. When a company loses 46 percent of their market valuation after walking away from webOS and their industry leading PC business they will say just about anything you want to hear. The long and the short of it is this: HP’s future doesn’t look certain, and webOS’s doubly so. For the record, I am a huge webOS fan, and right now unless you find the super $99 TouchPad price, I suggest you do not buy one.
Now onto happier news about buying the TouchPad. There are rumblings of another batch of TouchPads which might be made available by HP.
Q: When is HP getting more HP TouchPads? One week, two weeks, a month?
We will have more information available in the next few days about whether or not more will be available and if so, what the details will be about the situation.
If more TouchPads are made available we will post the information here immediately. To sign up for an alert you can check out HP’s own bench site, or you can sign up here on newtabletreviews.com and have an alert sent if HP puts more TouchPads for sale online. Indications are that the news will break in the next day or so.
