Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet arriving next week.

The Nook Tablet base specs were just released:

Barnes and Noble upgraded and revised the Nook Color for this holiday season. Not that they had any sort of choice in the matter as the Kindle Fire was a clear and direct competitor. This time around the stakes are a little larger, and would appear to be weighing in the favor of Amazon currently. You see Amazon has perhaps one of the most successful “cloud ecosystems running solidly in the background. They stream movies (to Prime members), sell music, have a cloud locker and a compelling catalog of books to choose from. The Nook Tablet, like its Nook Color predecessor is running a re-skinned and stripped down version of Android. As a result the Nook Tablet, will necessitate that Barnes and Noble builds out a compelling ecosystem for the customer.

What made the Nook Color interesting was relative simplicity of installing CyanogenMod on the device to replace the stock OS.  Barnes and Noble will need to be careful about how the artificially limit these tablets (Apps Marketplace,Native Google Apps) , as the game has changed. Two hundred dollar Android tablets are increasingly common and may stifle their previous successes if people do not find the stock experience full and rewarding enough.  The fact that the starting MSRP of this tablet is  $249 a full 50 more than the Amazon branded competition also makes this tablet

Kindle Fire
