Review

The iPad 2, for all intents and purposes, is still the tablet to beat in terms of both form and function. But if you’re die-hard Apple hater, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has just passed all other competition on Android tablet list.

The bigger, if younger, brother to Samsung’s 7-inch Galaxy Tab, this tablet sports a 10.1-inch screen with a vibrant Super PLS display, 1200×800 resolution and a wide viewing angle that rival the iPad 2 display in quality and performance. What’s more, the Tab 10.1 provides all of this power in a very portable package, which is actually a touch lighter than the iPad 2’s sleek design, if only a bit flimsier in hand.

As Honeycomb tablets continue to gain a foothold, there has been a fair amount of homogenization in the Android tablet marketplace, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 takes a step forward with Android 3.1. With the upgraded operating system comes increased speed in both the general interface and, where it’s most apparent, in general web browsing, and offers a few new (or at least finally debugged) tricks as well, like widget resizing. The Nvidia Tegra 2 processor has never been put on better display.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, especially when compared to its in-class competitors, is its glorious battery life. Aside from the iPad 2, you’ll be hard pressed to find any other tablet that can work as hard for a longer period of time.

The Galaxy Tab has a two megapixel front-facing camera and one three megapixel rear-facing cam, low resolutions which, on paper, are very unimpressive. But to its credit, the tablet makes the most of it, partially due to an improved stock camera application that streamlines the picture taking and sharing process. It also has a set of quality speakers that provide surprisingly good bass response.

Now, while it’s certainly a huge step in the right direction, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is admittedly not a perfect device. Some users may scoff at its relative lack of connection ports. Others may find the device, while exceedingly portable, even with a 10-inch screen, lacks the solid build quality that would really put it over the top.

Many detractors have also pointed to the device’s difficulty in syncing with desktop or laptop computers, especially Apple devices.

In general, however, the positives significantly outweigh the negatives.

CONCLUSION

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the crown jewel in the Android fleet and the new chief rival to the tablet king, the iPad 2. Users — especially those on Mac computers — won’t have as seamless a computer-tablet sync process as they would with an iPad, and questionable design choices might leave some users unhappy with how the tablet feels in hand. But make no mistake, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the Android tablet to beat for the time being.
